The clinical algorithms served as the clinical decision support source for the COMPETE III Vascular Tracker. They were the source of logic from which alerts and messages in the Vascular Tracker were generated. In keeping with the principles of evidence-based practice, the algorithms were developed based on a review of the literature for recommendations from recent clinical practice guidelines in diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease primary and secondary prevention. The results of recent key clinical trials in cardiovascular primary and secondary prevention were also taken into consideration. The content of the algorithms was reviewed by a panel of experts on COMPETE III’s Clinical Advisory Committee for accuracy and applicability to clinical practice.

The algorithms were designed to be highly individualized for each patient.

The algorithms were designed to be highly individualized for each patient. Based on data on a patient’s past medical history, current medications, allergies and vascular risk, the algorithms generated specific targets and recommendation messages. An easy colour-coded system (red, amber, green) was used to indicate to patients and physicians which vascular risk factors were on target and which required further attention.

COMPETE III’s team of Clinical Decision Support Specialists and programmers developed the algorithms according to clinical specifications provided by our Clinical Advisory Panel. Much work was done to make the algorithms as transparent as possible to increase acceptability for users and to make them easily adaptable to new clinical information. The algorithms ran nightly on both local and remote servers to generate updated individual Vascular Trackers daily. The algorithms were systematically tested using a series of test patients to check for errors and/or inconsistencies.
