Dr. Robert M. Bernstein BSc, PhD, MDCM, CCFP, FCFP, is a professor of family medicine at University of Ottawa and head of its Medical Informatics Research Group. He is Medical Director of the Sisters of Charity (Elizabeth Bruyere Pavilion) Family Medicine Centre and head of the department of Family Medicine at SCO, lead physician in the Bruyere FHN, and active staff at the Ottawa Hospital where he was Head of the Department of Family Medicine from 1987-1993.

He is a co-author of ENCODE-FM (Electronic Nomenclature and Classification of Disorders and Encounters for Family Medicine), and co-developer of PEPPER (Portable Electronic Patient Profile and Encounter Record), a family medicine electronic medical record being used at his Family Medicine Centre.

Dr. Bernstein is the Canadian representative to the World Organization of Family Physicians (WONCA) International Classification Committee and a member of the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) ICD-10 expert advisory panel. He was a researcher in the federally funded National Centres of Excellence program HEALNet (Health Evidence and Application Linkage Network), a coordinator of the HEALNet Health Informatics Curriculum Project, and co-investigator of in the COMPETE II CHIPP (Canada Health Infostructure Partnership Program) project. He is a co-investigator in Primary Health Care Transition Find projects COMPETE III, IMPACT, and Youth Clinic in which PEPPER is an integral part.

Dr. Bernstein has had a total of 144 publications and presentations including 22 invited presentations in his career.
