Dr. Hertzel C. Gerstein is a Professor in both the Department of Medicine and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. He is Director of the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at McMaster University and Director of the Diabetes Care and Research Program at the Hamilton Health Sciences. He is also Director of "Diabetes Hamilton" - a public health intervention program designed to improve the diabetes-related health of people with diabetes in the Hamilton region.

His research interests are the relationship between dysglycemia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the importance of dysglycemia in patients with renal failure, the emerging role of albuminuria as an important risk factor for both kidney and heart disease, and clinical trials in diabetes prevention and therapy. He has been, or is currently the principal investigator on several peer-reviewed studies and trials relating to the determinants and prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes. These are funded by CIHR, NIH, Health Canada, and the Canadian Diabetes Association. He is an Associate Editor for ACP Journal Club, and Evidence-Based Medicine, is on the Editorial Board for the Canadian Journal of Diabetes and Diabetes and Vascular Medicine, is co-editor of the textbook entitled Evidence-Based Diabetes Care, and chaired the evidence-based subcommittee for the CDA Evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Canada. He is also on the steering committee of the Canadian National Diabetes Surveillance System.

He has published more than 150 papers, editorials and commentaries, mainly on diabetes-related issues.
